Skin Care for the Winter

There’s something about the winter months that's absolutely alluring. But the cold can also play havoc with the skin on your face and body. Get through this coming winter with soft supple skin that glows with health even in the harshest cold. At rēnu med spa in Raleigh, NC, we know the problems your skin faces during the colder months. Here are some skincare tips to help.

1. Keep moisture in the air around you.

The skin acts as a barrier that keeps water inside your body. When the air around your body is cold and dry, water evaporates off the skin faster. To prevent dryness, use a humidifier. Humidifiers are a great way to get moisture back into the air within your home and tackle the ill effects of heaters. Also, increase your intake of water by a glass or two.

2. Use gentler products.

During the winter months, you must concentrate on retaining the skin’s moisture. So rather than using harsh cleansing products that strip the moisture off your skin, switch to gentle products that leave a layer of moisture on the skin. Gentle and creamy skin cleansing products work best. If your skin is sensitive and tends to break out, plain water on those areas would suffice.

3. Avoid hot baths and showers

There’s nothing quite as luxurious as a hot bath or shower during the winter months. But if you don’t moisturize your skin immediately, you will soon find cracks that, when exposed to air, cause something called “wintRaleigh can get chilly during the winter months. So if you must indulge in hot showers or baths, ensure the bathroom door is closed to retain the moisture within the bathroom. After you dry up, moisturize your body immediately with products that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

4. Invest in a rich moisturizer

Invest in a richer, thicker, and creamier moisturizer during the winter months. This is crucial to keeping your skin hydrated through the long winter months. Apply a thick layer of moisturizer after a shower and then reapply once more during the day. A great tip for the face is to first layer oil on your face and body and then use a cream-based moisturizer over this. This effectively traps in hydration.
